Mangalore: Aloe vera considered ‘a wonder plant’ - MANGALORE: The aloe vera is capable of wonders in dentistry. The cactus-like plant, known to have been a friend of those suffering from skin problems, can cure bleeding gums and gum problems associated with AIDS and Leukaemia. M. Suresh Kumar of Rajas Dental College and Hospital in Tirunelveli District in Tamil Nadu, said at the Indian Dental Conference here recently that aloe vera could prevent dry socket formation, promote healing and reduce swelling of soft tissue.

In root canal treatment, aloe vera could be used as a sedative as it reduces the sensitivity of nerve endings and acts as file lubricant. “It is effective in oral lesions such as migratory glossitis, desquamative gingivitis, vesiculobullous lesions, aspirin burns, radiation burns, and fungal and bacterial contamination.

It reduces the pain associated with eruption of wisdom teeth,” he said. “It can be used in treating diabetes mellitus and cancer. Research on it has been taken up at the universities of Oklahoma and Baylor, and Central Leather Institute of Department of Biochemistry, Adyar, Chennai,” Mr. Suresh said. “Aloe vera is known to have been first used in 330 B.C for healing of wounds.”
